Journey of Love-Kevin Woodson 2018-01-02 專訪
Woodson is a watercolor painter from Oakland, California, and he has been known internationally with his unique flower paintings. He has held shows in the U.S. and Taiwan, and receives commissions from all over the world. I had the pleasure to visit Woodson’s studio in Taiwan.
Woodson travels around the world finding inspirations. His journalist’s mind senses the extraordinary among the ordinary, and his illustrator skills embeds great stories in his paintings. As he found himself growing a strong bond with nature, and his inner voice eagers to express, he started to develop his painting style different from his past experience: abstract, gentle, and therapeutic.
Woodson’s flower paintings have a very gentle appearance. He said, “We as humans are connected with flowers. Sometimes after a long day of work, I would go into the garden to relax. Seeing how energetic the flowers bloom really calmed me down and took away my stress.” Woodson is right. Flowers are probably one of the very few universal beauties on the earth. From men, women, animals to insects, almost all creatures are somewhat attracted to flowers. Woodson believes that flowers possess healing properties, and he wants his audience to be healed as they view his art. In his paintings, you can’t find any pencil marks, but patches of gentle and lively colors scattered across the paper in the shapes of flowers. As I stood in front of them, I felt the energy and freedom. They reminded me of Monet’s Water Lilies.
Woodson opened his sketchbook to show me. He sketched 40-50 pages before the actual painting. Starting with complex construction and careful planning, he shaved down the distractions layer by layer. Eventually, he found the most concise and direct pathway to people’s heart. His paintings are like poetry. In the seemly simple and abstract appearance, there are pages of stories to tell. In fact, many of Woodson’s paintings contain poetry references, such as Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Woodson recited the passages for me and continued on the Greek mythology and history. As Woodson travels around the world and receives various inspirations, he realized that some of the most fundamental elements in his early life, such as literature and flower gardens are the core of his art. With such understanding and years of experience, Woodson successfully develops his unique style and stands out among other flower painters.
In addition to his extraordinary talent and skills, his personality stood out to me as well. When I arrived to the train station, it was raining and cold. His partner and he picked me up and welcomed me with the biggest smiles. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so cold anymore. Woodson talked with so much passion and excitement, and his positivity seemed to spread to everyone around him. His genuine intention and the passion to help can be seen in his paintings. Now, Woodson is going to move to Taiwan with his partner soon. Together, they will build their garden with watercolors, flowers and love, and their visitors will be able to experience the special art viewing therapy like I did today.
