Ida Bagus Putu Purwa
Born in 1976 in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia, Ida Bagus Putu Purwa graduated from Indonesian High School of Art (STSI) Denpasar.
Purwa is interested in using body language since the beginning of his career because they are more meaningful than words. “For me, bodies cannot lie. Hence body language is an accurate self-expression. It is why I use male bodies to express my feeling, emotion and imagination.” Through these male figures(a reflection of himself, as an individual living his creative life and as part of social beings living in the Balinese community), Purwa presents the problems he addresses using body language and gestures showing screams, sadness, fear, contemplation, hunger for freedom and so on. The male figure in his paintings keeps on moving, dancing and struggling, as if he is looking to break out of the medium of rectangular or circular canvas (or paper), looking for freedom outside its confined edges. The colors and the rhythm of white space suggest his mind for a utopia of freedom he has long embraced.
Purwa also uses paper as his painting media since the beginning of 2013 after being challenged by Berlin Avantgarde gallery in Germany. “Oil paints and charcoals produce very different result on paper, as well as dusel (smudging) technique I have been using. For me, this is new. I am quite happy with the result.”
Purwa's creations are highly appreciated and recognized by international galleries and art institutions. His exhibition experiences have been to many major cities in Asia and Europe.
